Amelia Island, Florida is home of the Old Jail and the haunting of Luc Simone Aury. He was the bastard son of a pirate by the name of Luis Aury. He was known for being a scoundrel and wanted for many crimes such as murder, rape and robbery to name only a few. When he was captured Aury was sentenced to hang till dead in the gallows behind the jail. As word spread of his execution a huge crowd gathered to take witness. The night before his hanging Aury slit his throat in an effort to deprive the spectators of his hanging. A surgeon was then called for and he crudely stitched up his throat and his collar was buttoned up to cleverly hide the wound. He was then dragged up the steps and the noose was put over his head. When the trap door was sprung, the stitches ripped open nearly decapitating Aury and spewing blood everywhere. Women in the crowd fainted, men screamed, and children were trampled as spectators fled in terror. Now Aury can be heard moaning where the old gallows used to be and sometimes his ghostly figure can be seen along with the gaping slash across his neck.
